Expat experiences - power outages

Eric Gonzalez

Living in a foreign county means a lot of things to most people; those things can and do vary widely, but most people do end up with one experience in common, experiencing theft, and lots of it. It’s a fact of life, just being here makes you part of a population that suffers from increased petty theft, and adding to that, being an expatriate means that aspiring thieves think you have more money and peg you as a juicy target. My stories are the same as everyone’s else,

Making a film is difficult. Getting it into theaters where people can see it can be even harder, as local director Chhay Bora is learning.

POTW - Home is where the pools are

Alison Jarvis

Just two blocks south of Le Royal on Street 102, lays two adjoining buildings. One was built in 1998 and the second completed only this year. Whilst the first captures a genteel English colonialism, the second offers international designer chic. Both offer accommodation aimed at the increasing numbers of expatriates working in Phnom Penh.

Why are international indices often flatly rejected in Cambodia?

Norbert Klein

The World Justice Project published its Rule Of Law Index in early June 2011 – placing Cambodia towards the end in this 66 countries observations on governments and the rule of law. One “>comment says about the Asia-Pacific region:

“New Zealand got the highest marks in Asia, followed by Japan. The lowest scores were in Cambodia and Pakistan, which ranked at the bottom on nearly every measure.”

After the International Court of Justice Order of 18 July 2011

Norbert Klein

The Cambodian government had requested the International Court of Justice – ICJ – for an interpretation of the judgment of 15 June 1962 concerning the temple of Preah Vihear, and had also requested some provisional measures to be taken against the presence of Thai troops in the region. The court pronounced, in response, an order on 18 July 2011. [Source: www.icj-cij.org/docket/files/151/16564.pdf]

Looking at Cambodian-Thai relations: changes after the elections in Thailand?

Norbert Klein

First of all: After having been away for Cambodia for about a month and not writing much – I am happy to be back since two days ago.

Transiting through Thailand on the way back provided me also with easy access to English language newspaper comments after last Sunday’s elections. Of course, most such information is also available on the Internet. But I might not have gotten the same impression I got when I saw a big letter headline on the 5 July 2011 front page of The Nation:
No reds in the new Cabinet

Raising the bar at Rahu

Jeffrey Staggs

Devotees of Metro, the uber-hip riverfront restaurant, have been awaiting the opening of the "new Metro" for months. The grand opening was Saturday, July 16, with a private party from 6 to 10 pm for 75 and their plus-ones. Then the doors officially opened.

For the record, though, the name is Rahu.
