After having been robbed for the 3rd time in 2 months, I was wondering what things others have robbed from them either at home or out, did you report it to the police?, did the police do anything?..so i'll get the ball rolling and look forward tyo some interesting responses:

1) Wallet (from my bedroom while sleeping) - reported (but not recorded), nothing came from it.
2) Giant Bicycle - reported and recorded, nothing came from it.
3) 3 chairs from my balcony - not bothering to report it this time because nothing will come from it.

My bin was stolen from outside the house...probably rubbish and all. If it's not tied down then kiss it goodbye!

we have several attempted break ins over the past weeks / months.

So far we have
* Installed motion detectors lights and alarms
* Added steel plates to where the padlock is placed inside on the iron doors at night.

The padlock on the inside on most doors with glass panes are easily accessible after they quietly and easily remove the glass. The glass is secured with screws and all they need is a screwdriver to gain access. then the easily pick the lock. The steel plates makes it impossible to reach the lock after the glass is removed.

Hope this helps.

Well it just so happens that I'll be moving out this weekend but that was planned anyway...but good advice. They use the neighbors 'cage' like security to climb up to my balcony so its an easy target. But still interested to hear of others that have been robbed.

Dear gpenp,

I have had stolen, since moving to Phnom Penh several years ago, in the following order:

1 x Honda Wave motorbike
1 x plastic rubbish bin (full of rubbish)
1 x tap

I did have the honour of pretending to steal a security guard's crappy plastic chair while he was asleep once at 2am when I had had a few bevvy's. But after the ensuing kerfuffle including the arrival of a few policemen, I realised that there is nothing funny about pretending to steal someones chair. Nothing at all. I am saddened to hear that your chairs have been stolen. What will you sit on? What will you rest your weary legs on after chasing the next burglar down the street? What will your electrician stand on next time he comes to fix your ceiling fans?

Woe is you.

Yours Sympathetically,

Elwood

Thanks for your sympathy Elwood. I don't think I can ever sit down again its that traumatic!!

But alas quite funny your escapades of stealing chairs... Can I ask were you in the BKK1 area last night? I might have to inform the cops of a serial chair thief.

dell laptop, iphone, camera, 2 terrabite external hard drive, all nicely wrapped in a handy sized rucksack sitting in the living room; attempted robbbery of a pushbike and a belt in the basket?!?!
gpenp, i think you should unscrew the top of the table, remove the frame from the glass and place it precariously back on the legs frame. hopefully a nasty injury might occur on the next attempted robbing session.

I had an attempted break in 3 years ago. They removed the padlocks of the gate and tried to get in the house but didn't manage for some reason ?!
Then I decided to take 2 puppy dogs which grew into 2 beautiful adult Rottweiler dogs. Great dogs but do not welcome unexpected "visitors" !Maybe considering getting yourself a dog !
By the way One of my dogs now has 9 puppies......

Contact me if interested !

Front metal gate unlocked and broke out off wall, thieves got scared off that time fortunately;
Purse stolen from counter, purse stolen from motobike, logo tag stolen from motobike, karaoke mic stolen by construction workers, some towels (yeah really) and laptop bag stolen from balcony drying out at night;
kid relieved off her jewellery on way back home;

It's a dangerous place, opportunistic thugs all over;

1. Tax sticker off my moto (worth maybe 1$)
2. telephone (worth maybe 10$)- my fault though for setting it on the bar while intoxicated-

Never had any robbery attempts at any of my houses since arriving in 2007.

I was robbed multiple times in the US (of very expensive things) but never had any problems in Cambodia.

Wrist watch (attempted while I was loading off a motodop so decided to get a car)
Bag (attempted while walking along st. 51 during water festival and lots of people in the street)
Car tax sticker (attempted since I already arrived at the carpark, so robber immediately left)
Mobile phone while shopping baby clothes at Russian Market.
Car stereo as it was parked in a not so well lighted space.

The only incident in the house is cleaner took some of my foreign currency cash (bat, aud, peso).

Agree that dog is more reliable to guard the house.

A camera.
I was pickpocketed two years ago when I was a Sorya mall during water festival.

Attempted jewelery theft (also during water festival).
I was out with friends heading for dinner when a group of maybe 20 people started converging on me, moving together until I was stuck in the crowd and people started grabbing at my neck to rip my necklace off.
I turned around with my elbow high, hitting people in the face, told them to fuck off and never reported it.

I do not have much confidence in the police force in Cambodia, the only reason I would alert the police is if the insurance company wants a police report or if I have the perp in my hands or locked up in a room.

Been in PP for about a year and only ever had the battery stolen out of my car... Twice.
I was parking on the street when I first got here in BKK1. There was a building being built next door, pretty sure it was the workers there. Now park in a lot of course.

Never had anything stolen off my person or from my house. Feeling thankful for that.

Back in 2002 I had my laptop stolen from my office in Phan Thiet, Vietnam. Obviously an inside-job. Police came, asked the value of it, police left again. My assistant told me that they wouldn't do any effort for a $1K laptop. At that time it was dial up so a few days later I got noticed that my laptop got connected somewhere in HCMC. Went there to the local police office, they could figure out the address but before they went to that house they asked.... the value of that laptop. They came back and told me that they have spoken with the people living there and they knew nothing about a laptop. end of story.
I never got robbed in the 11 years living in Vietnam but everything I've lost has been stolen by my staff. I had in total more than 20 housemaids, guess why..

Full tank of fuel and moto tax stickers (twice! - even though they were cut up in to little pieces)
Size 13 shoes (WTF?)
Massive plant pot (So easy to carry)
Crap wooden chairs (Elwood?)

Very thankful, it could be much worse.

Dearest BBLover,

I can only assume that your are joking with your quip above about the theft of your wooden chairs being the fault of yours truly. While I may have carried out such an act at a time long past, I am no recidivist. I feel troubled that, after posting intimate details of one of my darkest moments on this very forum, you should choose to lambast me for my chair fetish. I wish to set the record straight and let this be my announcement to the good people of Phnom Penh that I am no longer in the chair stealing business.

On another note, I have just come into possession of 3 perfectly functional chairs that may be a good replacement for the wooden ones you had stolen previously. Should you wish to view them, please PM me and I will mount my new Giant bicycle and bring over for you.

Yours Innocently

Elwood

In the last nine years, 3 bicycles locked outside overnight, one moto locked outside while I ran up to my mate's flat "for a second" or at least until 5AM. My fault every time. Good locks and lights as well as being friends with my neighbors has kept my home secure.
If you have screwed in glass windows I recommend drilling out the notches so the screws can not be taken out.

I have lived here for 4 years now and not a single thing to report. We lived on the 1st floor in a non foreigner populated area. And when we go on holiday we put a sign saying we are away (incase we get guests)then out a short nailed mat (as first deterance), electrofied our railings from the mains power, if all that fails we paid the neighbour opposite a dollar a day to keep a look out when the porch light switch on and the horn sounds. Dont moan if you get robbed, there are preventative measures, do not be a victim.

I was totally at fault on this one... forgot to lock my little red bike on a ten minute errand to Pharmacy DeLe Gare. Bike was gone when I came out, but the store broadcast the security footage of the theft in the retail area so everyone could see the perp. The guard had been distracted with a car and it took just a second. Young guy who scored on my lack of attention to detail.

I was down at Oressey bike market about an hour later looking around and a guy pulls up to me. "Do you remember me?" I didn't. "I'm from the pharmacy and have been looking around for your bike." He showed me a couple of photos, none of which were the right one. I totally appreciated the gesture. And got set back up in no time. I should have known better but it is nice to know that someone (and the business) cared enough to try to help me.
