I wish to start taking Khmer lessons, but find that it will be more enjoyable as well as beneficial being a small group (2-4 people) taking classes together.
Anyone up for forming a small group and finding a Khmer teacher?
I wish to takes classes two times a week. Maybe one time in the morning and one time in the afternoon/evening?
Hi tsrosenqvist
I would be interested in this as well. I just moved here and want to learn Khmer as soon as possible.
my cambo cell is 077973352
let me know!
Hi guys, any luck with this? I'm interested.
John
I second John's interest. Would be nice to this on a group basis.
If this post is still open I'm interested

Hi guys
well, I want to meet with a Khmer teacher this weekend and then ask him if he's up for group classes. If you have any other ideas, let me know. I need to get this sorted by the end of next week, otherwise my employer is not paying haha
what times and prices suit people?
Let me know, 077973352.
Hi M Verte, I am paying myself so price sensitive a little. Mornings or early evenings would be good for me during the week or any time on weekends.
012836237 is my number if you make any progress. Good luck.
Hey, glad to see there's some good interest in doing this.
My schedule is flexible for now, but like Bosco, I'm price sensitive. Though I reckon with ~4 people it should come out pretty cheap.
How many times a week would you all, ideally, like to meet?
M Verte: do you want to come back to us with this teacher's price and availability?
I can also contact a tutor who has posted on Cambodia Parents Network.
My number is 092407518.
John
At least twice a week is good for me, could do up to four times a week if that suited others.
Hey bosco and John
Meeting her tomorrow and will ask about group lessons. Individual lessons are 5$/hour I think so group lessons should be pretty cheap.
If we do this, are you okay with taking evening classes in the beginning? I would definitely want to meet three times a week.
When things with work settle a little, I would also be up for classes between 12 and 2 pm.
Where would you want to meet? My work is near the Russian Market and I live near Independence Monument.
Marja
I'm still interested
3-4 times a week is OK by me

Early or late evening starts would be good for me (ie before 6 or after 8 to start). I am also open to one weekend session. I live beside the Cambodiana but am ok to travel a bit.
Perhaps it's time we met for a coffee once the teacher more definite and John replies?
Hi all,
I am learning Khmer from an excellent teacher called Nim. She does run classes for groups and I am sure will give you a fair deal. Her number is +855 12342315. I have tried a number of teachers and she is by far the best.
Thanks Kev
Hey bosco, richobob and John
I had a really bad lesson on Wednesday ($5).
And a really good one today ($7). The latter was with a guy called Sotthiet and he is super friendly. He focuses on speaking only. I don't know what you are planning to do with your Khmer but I only need it for speaking right now and it was a good feeling to just start speaking. But you'll just have to see whether it works for you. He has a book (seems quite good) that he wrote himself on speaking Khmer and it's $5.
A group lesson with three people would be $4 per person, I'm sure we can negotiate something with him. But I think more than three will probably be too many.
I'm meeting him again on Friday, 6pm, my house.
Call me before if you want to come 077973352
Or else, we can meet for a coffee to talk things over on the weekend.
p.s.
Thanks for the tip Kev!
Your welcome and I can tell you she is good
Sorry, just back from the province. Did anything get sorted?
Interested ,where and what time ?
Hey,
didn't get much response. I am meeting again with Mr. Sotthiet this Wednesday. You have my number, call me if you are interested. Also, if you are generally interested but can't do Wednesday. I just needed to start with this asap so my job would pay for it.
Let me know
Marja
Just arrived in P P would like to learn Khmer what time you meeting on weds and where and may I join
Hey Marja,
Glad to hear you've been able to start Khmer lessons. I won't be able to join you tomorrow (or any Wednesday), but am available on other days.
Would you (and others) be interested in trying for regular Tuesday/Thursday sessions?
John
Yes I would where and what time
Hello John, thea and richobob
I am meeting with Mr Sotthiet this Friday, 6 pm.
Shane (aka bosco) will be joining. I think one more person would be okay. Just contact me.
I don't know how to do this in the future. Maybe we can all meet on the weekend quickly and just discuss times and places and khmer learning groups.
Maybe we can split up, I don't think more than 3 people per group is very effective.
Best
Marja
wow - I have never seen so much organising for something so simple, staggering but hope you get there in the end.
Ok I'm not keen evenings especially Friday evenings....
Would rather do mornings or afternoons if anyone else wants to join me
Marja: I won't be able to join you and Shane for the Friday evening lesson. But I'm still interested in joining you guys on other days.
Thea: I'm also keen to do mornings or afternoon lessons. If you are available I could try to set something up for Friday. Maybe 10am?
Kev: Thanks for your encouragement. I may try to give your teacher Nim a call.
Thanks guys.
John
You should mate, she is excellent but very expensive one on one. You get what you pay for though, she is fun to learn with but knows exactly what she is doing.
Friday would be good just let me know where
Friday is good for me
Richobob: are you interested in meeting on Friday at 10am with me and Thea or at 6pm with Marja?
John
10am is good for me,let me know where
Where are we meeting at ten tommorow
Hey Thea, just a PM to you, richobob.
This place is in street 200 near where I live

Natural Khmer seems to be learning through listening. It's a bit of a leap of faith. Some chat on it at the below link (and plenty more if you Google it).

I don't have a language teacher,my suggestion was the school in st 200. As nothing else had been put forward and the post had gone on and on and no one wanting to make a decision as to place and time
Wow you lot are so funny
Ok went to tht language school at ten an did a two hour stint. At first my head was spinning second hour easier. So have joined its 4 usd an hour and you can go any time you want from 8 to 12 and 2 to 6 and they also do sat mornings , it's all conversational, which for me is way easier than text book stuff
Thea, was that the Natural Khmer school? Did you just have to sit and listen/watch?
Hey guys (Thea and Richobob),
I had sent you both private messages regarding today's lesson 10am. Thea, you even responded. Anyway, I met with Nim this morning and it went well.
If you all are still interested in doing this, let's communicate over email or phone. I'm at rockview821 [at] yahoo [dot] com or reach me at 092-407518.
John
Hey,
just in case there is still somebody following the post who has not found a khmer lesson yet:
Me and Shane had a class today and are going to try and meet with Mr Sotthiet Mondays and Wednesdays, at 1 pm. Near the Russian Market. Maybe in my office, maybe in a cafe.
Let me know, I think three people would be ideal

We offer private instruction Khmer Lessons by appointment most everyday taught by Cambodian university students at our SmallWorld Student Center. We also have students who would come to your place to give instruction.
The lesson was good, I respond better to conversation than by text book. So think it will suit me better. But I guess the more you put into learning a language the better.
Glad to see someone has bitten the bullet and actually gone to see Nim, she is one of the best around I can assure you, not cheap though. She has a great teaching manner and I like the style she uses by using cards, it was very effective for me.
Thanks for the info KiwiKev, how much does Nim charge for one on one lessons
Sort that out with her mate
How did the group work out? I'm interested in doing the same thing - either joining up with you guys or getting another group together.
If anyone's interested in getting some lessons going, post or send me an email - jswift1243 [at] gmail [dot] com
If you just want free space to meet and speak with Khmer in a casual setting about anything our SmallWorld center is the place. Yes it may be far out in Toul Kork but Phnom Penh is expanding fast and soon Toul Kork will be close in. Maybe it is for you now? Come by and see. SmallWorldCambodia.com
You would consider our NGO service. We have many professional Khmer tutors to help you learn and speak Khmer in a very short time at your comfort home or office. Call us +85512912891 or visit: www.itsf-tutoring.blogspot.com
Hey Josh, the group worked out and is still going. We got a great teacher, PM for contact details if you want them!
