Two very poignant articles in today's PPP. I await the Government's official responses with bated breath ha ha. It's business as usual no matter what the Prime Minister says about RCAF logging or what authorities say about clamping down on paedos.

Where is Dexter when you need him?
Makes one want to be a vigilante.

Its hopeless-lets face it.
I visited prey saw about four years ago and learnt that sasha had paid a million for early release.
I also saw him hosting site meetings with architects and engineers involved with his island project.
He also got out and about in the bars at night.
I also remember that he got day release to attend the ceremony in snooky with HS to start the bridge construction about three years ago.
But why is one ever surprised?
It only increases my contempt for those who profess to be doing good works with police and the justice system when in fact they are swanning around sucking on the donor teat.
People here will know who I mean.

They should just cut down everything and let them face the natural concequences, whatever that will be, dust storms maybe. If the poor are affected, then pick up pitchforks and torches and go lynch those loggers.

It's the same for pedobear. If sex tourists are constantly being beaten up by vigilante gangs patrolling the streets, then eventually only honest tourists will come. What else can you do? Retake the country!

Or the more non-violent approach would be to have the To Catch A Logger and a Predator show in Cambodia. Public humiliation seems to work (to a certain degree).

But conservation of endangered plants and animals is a lot of the time exaggerated. That's just nature. Species keep dying out all the time. It's also requiring a lot of money that could go for something else. It's one thing to treat a sick animal but spending money on species that can't multiply enough is just unnecessary. Maybe the species are magnificent but everything will eventually be gone. Even the pyramids will crumble to dust. If there would be no poverty or starvation, then bother with conservation, otherwise spend money efficiently.

Would it be so immoral if someone put a bounty on the pederasses' heads?

The link below reports that the King made the pardon regarding Trofimov upon the advice of the Government.

http://www.rfa.org/english/news/cambodia/sex-12232011164253.html

Complete outrage maintained through the media would be an understatement if this happened in most other countries. But here in Cambodia the media doesn't have the same influence as in the West, in particular. It's largely up to the foreign media and local NGOs to comment and criticise.

The Government would have done its homework on Trofimov's pardon request. It probably judged any criticism as acceptable. After all, there's a new NGO law on the way and any NGO raising its head above water risks having it cut off.

It's time for the media here to take a stand and keep it in the headlines and exert whatever pressure they can on the Government, and indeed on Trofimov himself.

It's also time for all responsible embassies here to make formal representations to the Prime Minister that this sort of action sends the worst possible message to stop paedophiles coming to Cambodia.

I'd be grateful if those with inane comments could keep them to themselves. This circumstance requires something a bit more concrete.

I'm pleased to see that the PPP is keeping the paedos in the headlines and that the NGOs are actually trying to do something. But lameduck responses from government officials don't give any glimmer of hope that anything can be achieved.

Interestingly, the places where Trofimov and Watrin are reportedly staying are only a few hundred metres from me.

The above link from the PPP on 25 Jan reports that the 3 paedos pardoned recently (Trofimov, Watrin and Aubel) are all now in Sihanoukville. Trofimov is believed to be staying/have stayed? at a villa (reportedly owned by a government official) near Sokha, but has not been sighted for some time. Watrin's location is unknown and Aubel's movements are apparently being monitored.

The petition by local and international NGOs is welcome and hopefully something will come of it, especially re Trofimov/Molodyakov's extradition to Russia.

The real issue is about the premature pardoning of paedos by a corrupt government that happily receives significant international funding to curb paedos.

As I said before the rage against these paedos has to be maintained until a satisfactory outcome is reached. And it's great that the PPP and NGOs are doing this.

But the embassies of those countries that are assisting Cambodia to curb paedophilia all need to make their disgust about the pardons known to this government and to demand action.

Donor aid in fighting international paedos usually involves policing assistance. So what does it mean when all the good work done in gathering evidence, arresting, convicting and sentencing paedos is turned on its head by a corrupt system that provides premature pardons. To me, it's a slap in the face - an indication that the government is not at all serious about paedos. Donor countries need to do something.

Government doesn't care because pedophillia is a Khmer problem and affects many high ranking people. High ranking officials wanting very young virgins for a couple grand. Read in a recent report from sex workers/abused children that its a local problem much more than a Western one. Then of course the government also has to care about its citizens first, in order to do something, of which it does not.

So, you (Sharee and Broke) are effectively saying that because the government is corrupt and doesn't care about it's citizens that it's ok that foreign paedophiles are released early.

We all know what this government is like. The issue here is not about Cambodian paedos and yes, there are many more of those than there are foreign paedos.

The issue here is about the message that the government has sent to all the paedos in the world that in Cambodia they can get out of jail early if they have enough money and influence.

My point is simply that that message is wrong and responsible agencies, governments and the media should do something about it.

Not at all.

Yes we know and yes to the second part.

Correct, just that only a few reports in the PPP won't change a thing. The other parties seemingly can't do more than send a letter of 'outrage' to the media...

Gondal, get a grip and stop making assumptions where there are none to be made. And I also find your misleading remark about what I was "effectively saying" rather offensive. Please re-read my comment. No-where will you find any assumption or remark that I condone releasing paedophiles because the government doesn't care about its citizens. My point, and I will repost it again for you to see is that "the government also has to care about its citizens first, in order to do something, of which it does not". Yes you are right "The issue here is about the message that the government has sent to all the paedos"......"that that message is wrong and responsible agencies, governments and the media should do something about it". MY point was that the government doesn't care enough about its citizens to send the correct message - as evidenced by the releasing of these arseholes.

On a final note, leave the discourse analysis of other people's posts for someone who actually knows how to disassemble it.

I don't really know what language you speak or understand, but my post NEVER knocked you, period. It was actually you who threw the first snide remark. Touchy, yes, when I am being misrepresented.

Sharee, I apologise for getting some of my facts wrong. I've been on medication this past week and that led to my lack of clarity.

But let me say this; your original post focused on the Khmer problem. You did not specifically mention early pardoning of foreign paedophiles which is the issue of this thread. Most of us are aware of the extent of the Khmer problem. And this is an issue for the Cambodian government.

As a foreign national, I am deeply concerned about foreign paedophiles coming to this country. There are many people here, including some members of this forum, who believe that the foreign problem is overplayed in the media compared to the Khmer problem. But this simplistic argument misses the point that we, as guests in this country, should do everything possible to ensure that our own backyard is kept in order - I've made this same point previously.

A number of countries have invested heavily in helping Cambodia detect and prosecute foreign paedos. Those countries should be outraged by these early releases irrespective of nationality.

If we all sit back and do nothing because there's a bigger Cambodian problem, then nothing will ever change. More often than not it's those who persistently take issues forward who eventually make progress. And in Cambodia a little progress can be a huge step.

So my view is that we should make every representation possible to this government to help curb foreign paedophilia here.

While nothing may eventuate irt the three just released, at least it will be on the government's radar the next time pardons come up. And maybe too, while keeping this issue on the agenda, the government may start to do something about its own problem. Wishful thinking maybe, but what other options are there?
