Back in the last quarter of 2010 we started with one team to create a new revamped site, however after 3 months it was just not working. We now have outsourced to a new team working much more efficiently. They have already completed over 110 man hours of work on the site. many more to go.

There is a lot of work that the users do not immediately see that is happening on the back end.

We have another possibly 100 more hours work to do over the coming months. Development costs and EAS does not have a huge revenue source so we are a bit tight right now. Hang in there.

Some of the new changes
* Registered Users can now see their content when logged in.
http://www.expat-advisory.com/mycontent
* Avatars are now back- you should be able to upload now. No animated gifs just yet, but we are working on it.
* User Profiles now show the date you joined and the forums posts. At present it only shows the post you started. To be added are posts you have replied to.

Your user profile should have some of the content that you have added. More to come soon.

The list below shows some of the tasks that the team are working on. The site speed is one that will in the next few days / weeks be looked at more closely. We have been working on issues such as user registration and access for users. We feel that this is now pretty much sorted out.

Events
* Setting up a new module for reoccuring events such as quiz nights / darts nights / ladies nights so that users will only have to enter it once. i.e. ladies night every Wednesday.

Suggestions are welcome as to what the site lacks for you as a user.
If you have any bugs that you think still exist please feel free to let us know here.

Here is small sample of what we are currently working on. This is NOT the full list

The site is slick enough as it is.

Every time "you" make an enhancement means that I,and probably other subs, have to work out how to do what we always did before without too much trouble all over again with the invisible improvements that you have embedded for an enhanced experience.

The content is what the subs contribute.

Contacting EAS directly for help IS always helpful. Thanks for being like that. No BS.

Only noticeable deficiency is the loading speed (slough). That's what we get if you keep tinkering.

Stop pressing the buttons!!!

Cheers Wal,
The changes should make it easier to find your way around the site.
Your account is now in one place. The top right hand side as opposed to in two places as was the case before.

Speed is the next major challenge. we do know that the loading speed right now sucks.

Hang in the fella and thanks for participating

... after clicking "My Account" and then on the ensuing drop down list.

Just closing the page logs you out anyway. Right?

For a week or two now when I use IE 8 (then 9) If I click on any forum message I am redirected to a Listing. I have tried clearing temp files and cookies as well. It is fine on listing out the messages, but once I click on any message in any topic I get the same results with IE 8 or 9. Chrome works fine.

also on that drop down is a nw link...change password. someone asked for that..so we threw it in.
That's pretty much on the development side of things for now.
We are going to have the dev team concentrate 90% on the loading issue. The other 10+% will be kept aside for issues such as the IE 9 issues listed above.

Once we have worked out this bloody slowness of the site we will get back to more bells and whistles for you guys.

The slow loading should be a basic fix. Yes?

Maybe somebody else should be looking into this if it has been dragging on for this loooooong.....

Crikey! What other bells and whistles will we get? I can't wait!!

I seem to remember a button on the old version where it takes you to all new topics and replies, rather than digging through one by one. Or was it on some other site, anyway, be nice if you have a one button fits all here Wink

This site is starting to look good, and for me it seems to be loading fast also.

I noticed that the banner advert featuring scuba diving paraphernalia doesn't have the name of the vendor or any other contact info. Is that right?

One feature I would like you to consider is to display the thread title at the beginning of a discussion string on the actual page. It is currently only on the tab.

The site still loads very slowly.

If you have the banner adverts hosted off-site but appearing on the page through running scripts then people like me could deny all those scripts permission using something like noscript - making the site faster.

Because, to be honest, I never click on banner adverts.

Over the last few months things kind of went backwards with the team that was running development.

We started with a new team based in Vietnam 2 weeks ago.

So far they have done very well on the back end.

Speeds should now be about 30% faster. Its not good enough for us and they have found some other "bugs" that are slowing the site down. that should be sorted out over the next week or so.

The development and works that had been planned should be back on track in 3 weeks time.

Cheers

Oh where to begin.
At the login I guess. The site never logs me in, despite I clicked the "remember me" button.
What really pisses me off is when I go to the front page, and click a bunch of forum posts into new windows ( to load in the background). The when I go to the topics, lo, every single one says "you don't have permission to this content" or some other crock o shire. Please, fix the logins.
Then, what's with the posts themselves, they seem to have a weird nested structure. the latest updates aren't at the bottom, but perhaps halfway up the page as a reply to a reply to ... you get the idea. Or maybe that's changed recently.
Why have so many sub-forums? I get that there are different categories of stuff, but I'm interested in several. Buy and sell, where to find stuff, the pub. Actually, I'd like to just see all the posts in a single list, why can't I have that?
At least now the godawful slide-show events section has been fixed. That thing used to suck the life out of my cpu.
What's the point of the directory? Oh, I see it might generate advertising revenue if you have to pay to list, but what's the point for the user? I can just go to yellow pages to get categorized companies. Is it a "friends of EAS" list?
The articles and sport news I could do without, I mean my small hometown had more exiting news than the "polite" western press in cambodia. We need more gore, the cut and thrust of the business world, or just plain gossip. I can't stomach another "where to find the perfect mocha frappa latte chino" puff lifestyle piece, particularly when the only establishments ever featured are the NGO-friendly colonial joints. (sans, um, joints).
Finally, I wouldn't belong to any club that would have me as a member. But seriously, the place is dead. The few genuine characters that have graced the pages over the years have been pushed away. Are we expecting a surge in new users, tablet toting travellers, perhaps? How exactly is that going to happen?
The entire format is staid, there's nothing much to bring people in, or to keep them.
The one thing that really does work for expats, as witnessed by the CPN, "where to find" and "for sale" etc, you've crippled.
Locking some of the forums for "members only" is just assinine. As Jo Random, I'm not going to register just to see some offer of a baby bouncer, or where I can find curling tongs, and if I do, I won't be doing it to "join up", but simply to get at that one piece of information. 9/10 people probably won't bother, and will just conclude the site is worthless to them, and not bother looking regularly. Sure, CPN is also closed, but it's such a narrow purpose that you join for the membership itself, and are then surprised by all the non parent related posts about moving sales and so-on.
You need to take CPN, particularly the "leaving cambodia sale" posts, EAS "where to find", and perhaps a couple of other elements, and then structure that content, while keeping it dynamic.
That would be a daily go-to.
What's with EAS Burundi, Borneo, Vietnam even? The only active ones are cambodia and korea from what I can make out, I guess the admin used to live in korea? Just ditch them. Brand it as a cambodia forum (and the korean one, korean). I hate going to EAS.com and then having to click through to cambodia, what's the point?
Finally, facebook. The vampire squid of the internet. I have a dummy facebook account, but even then, I don't want that linked up all over the place, and mostly refuse to use it as a login anywhere. Just, choose a different login for the article comments.
Perhaps the same (fixed) login system you use for the foums.
That's all, a(nother) cold beer awaits.

what's this damn snow effect on the site?
Make my eyes go funny, and is probably sucking my cpu.
If I want snow I'll go to lapland.
Merry humbug.

Taylor,
Just back from Vietnam and meetings with the new development team.

Looking into
* The log in issue - remember me
* Directory is simply there for registered users to add a business - more on that 2nd Q 2012
* Forums locked down - that wont change.
* Re the colorful characters - there has only been one sin binning in the time the forums have been running - he knows why. as far as " I wouldn't belong to any club that would have me as a member." No one really listens to him anyway - Wink
* Articles - Feel like writing? let us know.
* Snow - the weather forecaster says that the snow will be gone by this evening - returning SE Asia to normal sunny Christmas weather

Enjoy your beer.
