A 6.6-kg boy was delivered after a difficult caesarean section, said a doctor at the Ha Noi Obstetrics Hospital on Thursday 10th April, 2008.

This is the heaviest newborn ever delivered in Vietnam. By comparison, the world's heaviest newborn to date weighs 6.8kg.

The baby's mother, Nguyen Thi Lien, 39, from Ha Noi's Hai Ba Trung District, was hospitalised on March 26 for observation due to her baby's considerable size. Ten days later, this past Tuesday, doctors successfully carried out the cesarean section.

The mother and her son are both in stable condition. However, the boy is still under supervision because of his size.
