Hanoi Fights Human Trafficking

The plan lists high-risk areas for this type of abduction as the districts of Soc Son, Dong Anh, Thanh Tri, Gia Lam, Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, the Southern Bus Station and Gia Lam Bus Station, and key roads from Ha Noi to Lang Son, Lao Cai, Ha Giang and Lai Chau provinces.

Female students now account for 7.5 per cent of victims

Police report a large increase in the number of women, especially students, being enticed and trafficked abroad.

Female students now account for 7.5 per cent of victims. This has risen from only one per cent in 2005.

Under the new plan, preventative and investigative methods into this crime will be synchronised.

City police would take prompt action to prevent this crime, said Do Kim Tuyen, deputy director of the Police Department. Specifically, they have been ordered to seize all traffickers they can find - from the past to the present.

Police in communes would be told to improve their competence in fighting traffickers and not allow trafficking gangs to thrive, said Tuyen.

They must also list all women and children believed to have been sold abroad to build a database to come to grips with the problem.

The plan is also to publicise the issue so that more people are aware of the situation. -VNS
