35 children drown everyday

The report reveals that in 2007, every province in Vietnam had from 7-25 children drown. Dong Thap, Bac Ninh and Ninh Binh provinces had the highest numbers of drowned children, 82, 52, and 50, respectively.

In 2006, over 30 children reportedly died in accidents, mainly traffic accidents and drowning, daily, with the highest numbers belonging to Nam Dinh (120), Dong Thap and Binh Phuoc (over 80).

A survey by the Medical University and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) shows that the annual number of Vietnamese children who die of accidents is much higher than the number of those who are killed by infectious diseases. Every year Vietnam has around 27,000 children die of accidents, including 12,700 by drowning, averaging 35 a day.

The Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs has asked provinces and cities to teach swimming at schools and educate parents in taking care of their children to avoid accidents.
