Talking to a Stranger, established for nearly five years and now in its larger second location, is a well known and respected expatriate drinking spot. The location is not the easiest to find but as Derek, says, only hard to find once..!
The garden atmosphere lends itself to be a very inducing spot to indulge in excellent conversation with a very different cross section of Phnom Penh 's expat community.
The selection of drinks is second to none, aided by the fact Derek has a close association with AUSKHMER, a locally run Australian owned Import Company, along witha huge selection of quality Australian wines by the glass. (And by the bottle too!)
The Bar is well-stocked and being Australians, Derek & Wendy pride themselves with having the coldest beers in Phnom Penh along with ample stubbie holders to guarantee your beer stays cold to the last drop.
Talking to a Stranger also prides itself on its original list of great Cocktails, with the LONG Vodka heading the list.
The collection of vodkas and other fine spirits make for an excellent choice when deciding what to drink. Absinthe, also a rarity in Cambodia , is available here with different varieties to choose from, although not a cheap spirit.
Food also is highly regarded at Talkin’ with the menu constantly changing and an emphasis on using imported meats and the freshest ingredients … Homemade popcorn is served to all customers rather than the usual peanuts offered around town.
The venue is also home to TALKIN HEADS a bi-weekly Quiz Night run on alternate Tuesdays. Live bands and fashion shows also feature at Talkin’, and is now the location for the Phnom Penh Players (local expat thespians) productions.
April 2007 saw Talking to a Stranger open its long-awaited retail shop selling primarily Australian wines, beers and ciders . Along with the many wines to choose from, Australian beef and lamb will also feature. Many other imported food items such as cheeses, olives, salami and favourites from Australia will be readily available.
In all Talking to a Stranger is a very unique Bar & Restaurant catering to a mainly ex-pat clientele, but catches those visitors looking for something away from the maddening crowds…
Australian beers and imported beers are available with such classic as COOPERS Pale & Sparking, Mercury Ciders, VB, Carlton Cold, Guinness and Grolsch, Asashi, Heineken and local favourite Beer Lao.
