Hallyeohaesang National Park in Tongyeong, Gyseongsangnam-do is now the proud owner of South Korea’s largest tourist cable car.
The cable is 1,975 meters in length, the longest in Korea for tourist use, and from the hilltop station you can enjoy view of the sea as well as Japan’s Tsushima Island.
Hallyeohaesang National Park is Korea’s first National Sea Park, designated in 1968, and has been attracting more than one million visitors each year since.
A total of 47 cable cars painted red, blue and yellow will take tourists to the peak of Mireuksan (mountain). At the mountaintop, the real beauty of Tongyeong city -- harmonizing curves, coastline and small islands offshore -- can be viewed at a glance.
The noise-free cable car, running 4 meters per second on average, reaches the top within 9 minutes. The gondola lifts can serve a maximum number of 1,800 passengers an hour.
The cable car project, part of the government’s plan for South Coast Tourism Belt Construction, took 5 years to complete and cost 17 billion won ($17 million).
Seon Kyung-chul, head of the Tongyeong Tourism Development Corporation, the project’s host company, said, "The observation cable car is expected to boost the tourism industry on the south coast as well as in Tongyeong. We will do our best to publicize the new cable car and further develop relevant tourism infrastructure in the region, so the south coast will attract more tourists from domestically and overseas."
The complete panoramic vista of the scattered islands can now be seen for about 200 days a year when free of fog or cloud, and about half a million tourists are expected to ride the cable cars annually, Seon added.
The fare is 8,000 won for adults, 4,500 for children, and a discount is given for groups of over 30.
The cable car service will commence this Friday, 18 April.
