Vietnam’s second carrier Pacific Airlines has sold 30,000 tickets since its makeover as a budget airline on February 13.

It flies to Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Ho Chi Minh City in addition to a couple of Taiwanese cities and is set to add Hue and Nha Trang to its network in the first quarter this year.

The carrier is also planning to tie up with Thailand’s Bangkok Airways to begin a HCMC-Bangkok service and with Australia’s Jetstar for a HCMC-Singapore service, both in late March.

Three foreign no-frills carriers are already in Vietnam – the Singapore-based Tiger Airways, Thai AirAsia, and Jetstar.

Jetstar is also reportedly seeking to pick up stakes in Pacific. But a Vietnam Civil Aviation Bureau official said the government was yet to permit the Australian carrier to be involved in domestic services.

He added no applications for establishing a new airline had been submitted to the government recently.
