One more mystery oil slick reaches Vietnam coast
Vietnam continues to be plagued by mystery oil slicks with the central Khanh Hoa province to be the latest hit as authorities there said Monday a slick of unknown origin has reached local beaches.
Local residents said the slick had appeared off Van Thanh commune a day or two ago.
Many parts of the country reported spills over the past few months which have impacted beaches and marine environments but their sources remain unknown.
In Ben Tre province in the Mekong Delta, thousands of tons of mollusks have been killed by the slick. The central and northern coasts too are affected.
A few days ago, a new slick measuring one kilometer across was reported off the southern Vung Tau Town.
Defense Minster Senior Lieutenant General Phung Quang Thanh has said a national center to train search and rescue in the air and water, two centers to cope with oil spills, and a search and rescue station will all be set up this year.
