7PM: DOCUMENTARY - Tut is a 52-year-old fisherman living in Kampot. In spite of the language barrier, he recounts for the first time and without any words his past during the Khmer Rouge regime, demonstrating the torture he experienced in prison the year he turned fifteen. Alexandre Liebert’s SCARS OF CAMBODIA (2014, 30 min) features a key device, or rather lack of one: There is no speech. Guided only by a poignantly sparse score and natural sounds, the audience experiences Tut’s tale through his body, as he did.

8PM: FEATURE FILM - The Czech-Cambodian film NINE CIRCLES OF HELL (1989, 105 min) is a poignant love story set amid the hell of the Pol Pot regime. As the Khmer Rouge carves a path of death throughout the land, a Czech doctor Milan Knazko falls in love with a Cambodian woman Oum Savanny, who later married the film’s director Milan Muchna. NINE CIRCLES OF HELL was screened in the “Un Certain Regard” section at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. The English-subtitled version has been produced by Meta House.
