Cambodia Makes Progress in Swimming, Athletics and Taekwondo as games gets underway

Cambodia’s Hem Thon Ponleou’s attempt to make it to the next round of the 200m Breaststroke Swimming received a boost at the JAKABARING AQUATIC CENTRE in Palembang earlier on Saturday as the 21 year old swimmer finished 7th with a time of 02:38:53 minutes . Ponleou was drawn in group 1 in the heat along with others from Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar and Vietnam where he finished 3rd behind Malaysia and Indonesia. His time was good enough to put him in the final 8 to vie for a place on the podium.

Compatriots Lim Odam and Maximov Chamroeun Youri both competed in the same heat in the preliminary group 1 but failed to progress in the 50m butterfly Finishing 6th and 7th respectively.

Lim Odam recorded a time of 29:57 sec while Youri came a distant 30”15 seconds way too short of the qualification time of 25:74secs.

In the athletics event held also Swiss Based Pin Wanheab qualified for the finals of the 100m finishing 4th in Semi finals 1 with a time of 11.09 secs behind Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The heat was won by Indonesia’s Fadlin at a time of 10.69secs.

Compatriot Sar Purveasna failed to progress from semi finals 2 after coming 7th with a distant 11:46 sec way below the qualification mark of 11.09.

Pin Waheab will have to step up in the finals to make a podium finish as his time of 11.09 is the worst among the 8 finalists. Franklin of Indonesia pulled the best qualification time of 10.54 followed by Singapore’s Yeo Foo Gary with 10.64 ahead of Fadlin’s 10.69 finish.

In the Taekwondo under 74kg men, Tubbs Daren lost 0-1 to Vietnam's Thanh Tam Duong while in the Under 62kg female, Sev Mey Sorn defeated Malaysia's Maznal Samad 2-1 to move to the semi finals.

In the Semi Finals, Seav mey Sorn was paired against Vietnam's Thanh Thao Nguyen. The Vietnamese raced into a 3-0 lead in the first round and a late fight back by Sorn could only result to a 4-2 loss. She will go on to win Cambodia's first medal in the 26th SEA games.

Thailand once again drubbed Cambodia 3-0 in the team badminton at the Senayan Sports complex Jakarta. The Thai team comprising of TANONGSAK SAENSOMB , PAKKAWAT VILAILAK and PISIT POODCHALAT were too strong for Cambodia's TEAV YONGVANNAK VANN CHANPISEY and PRUM SARAVUTH .

In the first match up between Cambodia's Teav Younvannak against Thai's Tanongsak Saesomb, the cambodian lost two straight sets, 14-21, 9-21. while Vann Chanpisey couldnt match Thai's Pakkawat Vilailak as he went down 6-21 and 9-21 in two straight sets.

In the final team match, Prum Sarawuth stretched Thai's Pisit Poodchalat in the first set losing by just 4 points as the set ended 21-17 in favor of the Thai. The last set was no way better as he lost 9-21 to give the Thai a resounding 3-0 win over Cambodia in the men singles.
