totallyrandomman talks to energised bluegrass combo Grass Snake Union about the Phnom Penh music scene, recording an EP and their upcoming show at Sharky’s Bar.

Grass Snake Union grew organically from a jam session after a Kheltica gig in early 2011 and have been honing their high energy acoustic mix of bluegrass, americana and lo-fi ever since. They have slowly accrued members as TJ (the bands ringleader and only US member) ‘lured them into the fold’. They now comprise:

  • TJ Brown – Lead Vocals, Guitar
  • Jose Encinas – Banjo, Occasional Vocals
  • Daniel Talstra – Fiddle
  • Borja Serrador – Bass
  • Greg Lavender – Drums, Percussion
  • Alex Leonard – Harmony Vocals, Plans to learn the Ukulele

They are regulars on the Phnom Penh music scene and recently played their first international gig in Ho Chi Min, Vietnam.

They‘re currently recording their first EP at Bodhi Villa Studios in Kampot, which will combine original music with their own unique takes on familiar songs. Details of progress on the EP can be found on their website. www.grasssnakeunion.com

If you want to check out their music before you head to the gig, you can watch them here; crammed into a tuk-tuk, drums and all, belting out a rendition of Alan Reynolds and Bob McDill’s 70s Country standard Catfish John, amidst the rattle and thrum of Phnom Penh traffic.
