The U.S. Embassy in Cambodia alerts U.S. citizens traveling in Cambodia of heavy rain and flooding along the Tonle Sap and other rivers through October 3, 2011. Weather reports predict heavy rain for the area that could cause the Tonle Sap to rise above its banks in the near future. Rivers throughout Cambodia are at a significantly higher level than is normal during the rainy season. With anticipated rains from Typhoon Nesat, currently a Category 1 typhoon in the South China Sea, and winds from Tropical Storm Nalgae, water levels may continue to rise and could pose a danger to safety.

Conditions and water levels in Cambodia may change rapidly and without warning. The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens to prepare for worst case scenarios and closely monitor media reporting on weather conditions and to follow all official instructions from local authorities. Flood preparation guidance may be found on the website of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, at http://www.fema.gov/hazard/flood/index.shtm.

The U.S. Embassy is located at 1, Street 96 (near Wat Phnom), Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The after-hours emergency telephone number is (855-23) 728-000, and the email address for the American Citizen Services Unit is ACSPhnomPenh [at] state [dot] gov.

As the Department of State continues to develop information on traveling in Cambodia, it shares travel warning information through its Consular Information Program documents, such as Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, Country Information, and country specific messages and emergency messages, all of which are available on the Bureau of Consular Affairs website. Please stay up to date by bookmarking our website or downloading our free Smart Traveler iPhone App for travel information at your fingertips. In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or, from other countries, on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Friday, Eastern Time (except U.S. federal holidays).
